About the Artist: Kevin Hackett

My artist's moniker is Moabyte. It's a name that represents my love and connection to nature (Moab) and my passion for creating digital art with technology (byte). I began using this moniker in 1996 while living in Moab, Utah. It was there that I began this incredible journey into audio-visual arts. In my work, I explore the intricate and symbiotic relationship between technology and nature, two forces often perceived as opposing or disconnected. Yet, upon closer examination, they are inextricably linked, each influencing and shaping the other in profound ways. Nature, with its organic systems, cycles, and processes, provides the foundation for human innovation, while technology, in its relentless progression, offers new tools to understand, protect, and interact with the natural world. The lines between the two are increasingly blurred as we develop more sophisticated ways of integrating technological advancements into our ecosystems. I approach this theme by combining elements of both the natural world and technological forms. My work often merges organic materials with digital media, creating a dialogue between the tactile, living essence of nature and the intangible, yet potent, presence of technology. Through this fusion, I aim to provoke reflection on the ways we rely on and reshape the environment through our creations, and how, in turn, nature continues to influence and inspire technological evolution. At its core, my art serves as a reminder that technology is not a separate entity, but rather a continuation of the natural world’s own processes. In our quest to innovate and expand, we must not forget that we are part of a larger ecosystem, one where the boundaries between the organic and the synthetic are often more fluid than we might imagine. The future of our planet lies not in choosing between these forces, but in understanding and cultivating a deeper connection between them.
